It's a new year and a time to make goals for ourselves for 2011 - like keeping our blog better updated! Our goal this year is to help everyone in our Stake to Be Prepared in 2011. With so many facets to preparedness we would like some guidance from YOU! So please take a minute and fill out our survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8RV663R . This will help Kristie and I see where your needs are and what you would like from us this year.
Also I should introduce my new partner in crime - Kristie Marsden. She has jumped on board after the Lee Family moved, ready to go, and she is amazing in her knowledge of food storage.
We have also scheduled this years classes. We will be teaching one class a month at the Happy Valley bldg. The classes are on the third Friday so bring your sweet heart and we will provide the treats and hopefully a little entertainment along with lots of really good information to help you and your family be prepared in 2011.
Our first class is February 18th, at 7pm. We will be starting off with gardening, so you can get our gardens set up and be ready to plant by March. Also in February we have a bonus class, Paul Munsen from Sun Ovens will be in the valley and he will be doing a class/demo for us at the Stake Center on Saturday, February 26th at 2:30 pm. His classes are always great and he will be cooking for us, YUM! We will be pre-ordering solar ovens that he will bring with him. This is one class you don't want to miss.
Happy New Year,
Tawnya

Cannery Changes
There have been some changes at the Mesa Cannery do to the changing economic climate. They are not being used enough to stay open six days a week, so to help with their efficiency they have consolidated the stake shifts. Our new shift is on the second Saturday of each month beginning on July 10th. We have been assigned the 9 am shift. So this is great for our stake, Saturday mornings!! Now we should have no excuses for not better utilizing the the Mesa Cannery!
The cannery is now closed on Monday's. Friday's are still open for family canning from 8 am to 7 pm but this is by appointment only now. You can still purchase bulk items anytime on Saturdays. Karleah will be in touch with all the ward canning specialist to help facilitate this change.

Hands On Gardening
Ready to come and get dirty? If so come on over on Saturday, June 19th at 8 am and we are going to play in the dirt. Paul will be here and we will be setting up my garden beds the Mittlieder way so that everyone can work through the process from the beginning. Sometimes doing it makes all the difference, if you are like me I learn better doing then reading, so here is your opportunity to see how to start up your garden. Best of all Paul will be here so we can ask him questions as we go.
See ya there - I will be the one handing out the donuts and juice! :)

New Date's - I know you all hate schedule changes
Our first gardening class was this last Friday and I am sooo excited to get going on my garden. Though my husband will probably shoot me when I break the news that we need to re-do the watering system - but you can't argue when you see the results, AMAZING!
Karleah and I are going to change the class schedule a little do to the fact that between family vacations, sending off a missionary, cooking for camp, etc we are finding that June and July are going to be a challenge for both of us. We are postponing June and July's classes to August and September. We will be having a hands on Mittleider gardening class at my house on Saturday, June 19th. We will start at 8am. Then in July we will have a hands-on solar oven cooking class.
Recipes and book titles I will get posted later tonight.

May is Gardening Month - at least for our classes
I finally sat down with my blogger trainer (thank you Trevlyn) so now I just need to schedule in my blogging time!
Okay May's class is quickly approaching and we are sooo very excited! We will have special guest speakers Paul and Tammy Jones. For those of you who have been around awhile you might remember them from the North Canyon Ward. They are going to teach us all about gardening in Arizona and more specifically the Mittleider Method.
So please come join us this month, we are going to have a lot of fun!

For those of you who have been around awhile you might remember them from the North Canyon Ward. They are going to teach us all about gardening in Arizona and more specifically the Mittleider Method.
This is a method that allows someone who is NOT a master gardener to have a master garden. It allows for maximum output with a minimum amount of space, and provides natural nutrients to the plants so that you can grow anywhere, with any kind of dirt (no matter how bad). It's incredible! It is seriously a no fail gardening method. This is a picture of Paul and Tammy's first garden using this method - and yes I am jealous!
So please come join us this month, we are going to have a lot of fun!
